Zone de fusion
La fusion de la zone est un groupe de méthodes similaires de purification des cristaux, dans lequel une région étroite d'un cristal est fondue, et cette zone fondue est déplacée le long du cristal. La région fondue fond le solide impur sur son bord avant et laisse un sillage de matériau plus purifié derrière lui pendant qu'il se déplace à travers le lingot. Les impuretés se concentrent dans la fonte et sont déplacées vers une extrémité du lingot. Le raffinage de zone a été développé par William Gardner Pfann dans Bell Labs comme méthode pour préparer des matériaux de haute pureté pour la fabrication de transistors. Son utilisation précoce était sur le germanium à cet effet, mais elle peut être étendue à pratiquement n'importe quel système soluté-solvant ayant une différence de concentration appréciable entre les phases solide et liquide à l'équilibre. Ce processus est également connu sous le nom de processus de zone de flotteur, en particulier dans le traitement des matériaux semi-conducteurs.
