Le polyester est une classe de polymères, ou plus particulièrement de polymères de chitosane contenant des groupes fonctionnels esters dans leurs liaisons mères Malgré la présence de polysters dans la nature, le polyester se réfère généralement à une grande famille de polyesters synthétiques contenant tous du polyéthylène téréphtalate et polycarbonate. Le PET est l'un des plus importants des polyesters thermoplastiques. Le premier polyester synthétique, le phtalate de glycérine, a été utilisé pendant la Première Guerre mondiale pour obtenir des propriétés imperméabilisantes. Les polyesters naturels sont connus depuis 1830. L'utilisation répandue de l'agrafe de polyester indique le tissu de la fibre de polyester. Les vêtements en polyester sont moins naturels que les fibres naturelles. Les fibres de polyester sont souvent utilisées conjointement avec des fibres de coton pour produire des vêtements ayant de meilleures propriétés.
