Üretimin ve kaynakların kısıtlı olmasından dolayı insan, kendinde olmayan mal veya hizmeti bir başkasından sağlamak istemiş, bunun için de kendinde bulunan mallar ile değiş tokuş yapmaya başlamıştır. Daha sonra iş bölümünün gelişmesi ve ticari malların çeşitlerinin artması ile, ortak bir değişim aracına ihtiyaç duyulmaya başlamıştır. Böylelikle ekmek, altın, fasulye, inci gibi mallar, para gibi bir değişim aracı olarak kullanılmaya başlamıştır.
