रात के बाद की रोशनी या रात के बाद प्रकाश उच्च वायुमंडलीय परतों की मंद प्रकाश का अर्थ है। 1865 में एंडर्स एंगस्ट्रम ने इसकी खोज की थी। चंद्रमा के बाद के विचारों की अवशिष्ट चमक पूरी तरह से जमीन पर कृत्रिम प्रकाश स्रोतों से नहीं होती है, सूर्य के प्रकाश पर अप्रत्यक्ष बिखरने और सितारों की रोशनी, लेकिन आयनोस्फीयर में प्रक्रियाओं से भी। इस परत में गैस परमाणुओं और अणुओं को आयनित किया जाता है और सौर पराबैंगनी विकिरण द्वारा पृथक किया जाता है। कणों के पुनर्संयोजन में, विकिरण दृश्य क्षेत्र में उत्सर्जित होता है, जो सूर्यास्त के बाद तक जारी रहता है। दिन के दौरान इस प्रक्रिया के द्वारा उत्पन्न प्रकाश प्रकाश रात की तुलना में अधिक तीव्र होता है, लेकिन यह सूर्य के प्रकाश से अधिक पड़ता है पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल के बाहर से Airglow पृथ्वी की सतह से लगभग 90-500 किमी ऊपर एक चमकदार अंगूठी के रूप में दिखाई देता है, जिससे एक हरे रंग का बैंड 90 से 100 किमी ऊंचाई पर हावी हो जाता है। गुरुत्वाकर्षण लहरों के कारण घनत्व में परिवर्तन के कारण, यह व्यक्तिगत बैंड के रूप में देखा जा सकता है।

Das Nachthimmellicht oder Nachthimmelsleuchten bezeichnet ein schwaches Leuchten höherer Atmosphärenschichten. Es wurde 1868 von Anders Ångström entdeckt. Die Resthelligkeit eines mondlosen Nachthimmels resultiert nicht allein aus künstlichen Lichtquellen am Boden, der indirekten Streuung von Sonnenlicht und dem Licht der Sterne, sondern auch aus Prozessen in der Ionosphäre. Die Gasatome und -moleküle in dieser Schicht werden durch die solare Ultraviolettstrahlung ionisiert und dissoziiert. Bei der Rekombination der Teilchen wird Strahlung im sichtbaren Bereich ausgesandt, die noch bis lange nach Sonnenuntergang anhält. Das bei Tag durch diesen Prozess entstehende Licht ist wesentlich intensiver als das nächtliche, wird jedoch durch das Licht der Sonne überstrahlt. Von außerhalb der Erdatmosphäre erscheint das Airglow als leuchtende Ringe in einer Höhe von ca. 90–500 km über der Erdoberfläche, wobei vor allem ein grünes Band in 90 bis 100 km Höhe dominiert. Wegen Dichteänderungen aufgrund von Schwerewellen lässt sich dieses in Form einzelner Bänder beobachten.
