कॉर्पस लिट्यूम, जिसे कॉर्पस लिट्यूम भी कहा जाता है, स्तनपाहों में अंडाशय के दौरान स्तनधारियों में होता है। लाइटीनिंग हार्मोन के प्रभाव के तहत, परिपक्व अंडा तथाकथित कूप छोड़ देता है; शेष - फूट फली की दीवार में स्थित ग्रैन्यूलोसा कोशिकाओं से मिलकर - एक पीला शरीर कहा जाता है महीने के चक्र के दूसरे छमाही में, यह एस्ट्रोजन हार्मोन की थोड़ी मात्रा पैदा करता है और, तेजी से, प्रोजेस्टेरोन, जिसे पीला शरीर हार्मोन भी कहा जाता है और जो गर्भावस्था के रखरखाव को सुनिश्चित करता है। पहले 7-8 गर्भावधि सप्ताहों में, प्रोजेस्टेरोन लगभग पूरी तरह से कॉर्पस लिट्यूम द्वारा बनाई जाती है, जिसके बाद यह कार्य मुख्यतः नाल पर ले जाता है। प्रोजेस्टेरोन के प्रभाव के तहत, गर्भाशय की परत एक निषेचित अंडे की संभावित गर्भावस्था और आरोपण के लिए तैयार करता है। अगर कोई गर्भावस्था नहीं होती है, तो कॉरपस लिट्यूम अंडाशय के 9 दिनों के बाद, निशान के ऊतकों में होने वाले परिवर्तन को कम करने लगती है, और कम और कम प्रोजेस्टेरोन पैदा करता है, जो अंततः मासिक धर्म के खून बह रहा है।

Der Gelbkörper, auch Corpus luteum genannt, entsteht bei Säugetieren während des Eisprungs einer Eizelle. Unter dem Einfluss des luteinisierenden Hormons verlässt die reife Eizelle den sogenannten Follikel; der Rest – bestehend aus den in der Wand des geplatzten Follikels liegenden Granulosazellen – wird als Gelbkörper bezeichnet. Er produziert in der zweiten Hälfte des Monatszyklus kleine Mengen der Hormone Östrogen und, zunehmend, Progesteron, das auch Gelbkörperhormon genannt wird und für die Aufrechterhaltung der Schwangerschaft sorgt. In den ersten 7–8 Schwangerschaftswochen wird das Progesteron fast ausschließlich vom Gelbkörper gebildet, danach übernimmt diese Aufgabe überwiegend die Plazenta. Unter der Wirkung des Progesterons bereitet sich die Gebärmutterschleimhaut auf eine mögliche Schwangerschaft und Einnistung einer befruchteten Eizelle vor. Kommt es zu keiner Schwangerschaft, beginnt der Gelbkörper etwa 9 Tage nach der Ovulation zu schrumpfen, wandelt sich in Narbengewebe um und produziert dabei immer weniger Progesteron, was beim Menschen schließlich zur Regelblutung führt.
