पारिस्थितिकी में, विशेष रूप से लिम्नोलॉजी में, डिस्ट्रोफी पाषाण-गरीब, मानवीय-एसिड-अमीर और नीबू से मुक्त पानी की जल राज्य को संदर्भित करता है, जिसे डिस्ट्रॉफिक जल के रूप में नामित किया जाता है। इस प्रकार के जल भंग मूसल पदार्थ पदार्थों के उच्च अनुपात से बने होते हैं और तदनुसार उन्हें भूरे रंग के झीलों के रूप में नामित किया जाता है। इस श्रेणी में मुख्य रूप से दलदलीय जल और जल निकायों हैं जो उच्च पत्ते के अनुपात के साथ जंगली प्रजनन करते हैं, मूसल पदार्थ पदार्थों के अमीर माहौल से आते हैं। डिस्ट्रोफिक झीलों में बहुत कम फाईप्लांक्टन है, लेकिन उनके पास झूप्लंकटन की एक समृद्ध घटना है; ऑक्सीजन की कमी वाले गहरे पानी की वजह से प्रजातियों में मृदा प्रजाति बहुत खराब है। इन जल के ठेठ तलछटी प्रपत्र उप या पीट कीचड़ है।

Dystrophie bezeichnet in der Ökologie, speziell in der Limnologie, den Wasserzustand nährstoffarmer, huminsäurereicher und kalkfreier Gewässer, die entsprechend als dystrophe Gewässer bezeichnet werden. Gewässer dieses Typs sind durch den hohen Anteil an gelösten Humussubstanzen braun gefärbt und werden entsprechend auch als Braunwasserseen bezeichnet. In diese Kategorie fallen vor allem Moorgewässer und Gewässer in Bruchwäldern mit einem hohen Laubwurfanteil, die Humussubstanzen stammen aus der moorreichen Umgebung der Gewässer. In dystrophen Seen ist nur sehr wenig Phytoplankton zu finden, allerdings verfügen sie über ein reiches Vorkommen von Zooplankton; aufgrund des sauerstoffarmen Tiefenwassers ist die Bodenfauna zudem sehr artenarm. Die typische Sedimentform dieser Gewässer ist der Dy bzw. Torfschlamm.
