एपिलीमन को भौतिक लिम्नोलॉजी में कहा जाता है, ऊपरी गरम और एक परतदार खड़े पानी में घूमती पानी की परत। एपिलीमन को निचली पानी परत से अलग किया जाता है, हाइपोलिमनियन, दरार परत, धातु आयन द्वारा। महाकाव्य में सूरज की रोशनी का अवशोषण दिन को अपने तापमान परत से पैदा करता है। एक साथ घुमावदार क्रिया, यदि आवश्यक हो तो, ऐसे लेयरिंग को रोकने और सजातीय ताप के चरण के लिए आगे बढ़ सकता है। घटती धूप और सतह की रात के समय में, संवहन प्रवाह महाकाव्य के भीतर होते हैं, जो पूरे epilimnion homogenize और कुछ मामलों में भी intermixing में metalimnion की ऊपरी परत शामिल है। भ्रमित नहीं होना मिक्कलिमनियन के साथ महाकाव्य है, जो मेरोमेक्टिक झीलों में ऊपरी, वार्षिक चक्रीय रूप से शामिल परत में मोनिमोलिमनियन के नाम के विपरीत है।

Das Epilimnion nennt man in der physikalischen Limnologie die obere erwärmte und stark bewegte Wasserschicht in einem geschichteten stehenden Gewässer. Das Epilimnion ist durch die Sprungschicht, das Metalimnion, von der unteren Wasserschicht, dem Hypolimnion getrennt. Im Epilimnion baut sich durch die Absorption des Sonnenlichtes den Tag über eine eigene Temperaturschichtung auf. Gleichzeitige Windeinwirkung kann eine solche Schichtung gegebenenfalls verhindern und zu einer Phase homogener Erwärmung führen. Bei abendlich abnehmender Sonneneinstrahlung und durch die nächtliche Abkühlung der Oberfläche kommt es innerhalb des Epilimnions zu Konvektionsströmungen, die das ganze Epilimnion homogenisieren und unter Umständen sogar die obersten Schichten des Metalimnions in die Durchmischung einbeziehen können. Nicht zu verwechseln ist das Epilimnion mit dem Mixolimnion, das in meromiktischen Seen die obere, jahreszyklisch in die Zirkulation einbezogene Schicht als Gegensatz zum Monimolimnion bezeichnet.
