Ein Ligand (lat. ligare = binden) bezeichnet in der Komplexchemie (Organometallchemie, Metallorganik und Bioanorganik) ein Atom oder Molekül, welches über eine dative Bindung (koordinative Bindung) an ein zentrales Metall-Ion koordiniert. Die koordinative Bindung kommt durch den Lewis-Charakter der beteiligten Bindungspartner zustande: Liganden sind Lewis-Basen (Elektronenpaar-Donatoren) und Metallionen sind Lewis-Säuren (Elektronenpaar-Akzeptoren). Die Besonderheit der Komplexverbindung und der Unterschied zur kovalenten Bindung besteht darin, dass bei der koordinativen Bindung beide Bindungselektronen vom Liganden zur Verfügung gestellt werden: ein Ligand muss dementsprechend über mindestens ein freies Elektronenpaar verfügen (Lewis-Base). Komplexverbindungen sind zum Beispiel das rote Blutlaugensalz (Kaliumhexacyanidoferrat(III)), bei dem das zentrale Eisenion von sechs Liganden, in diesem Fall Cyanidionen, umgeben ist. Protoporphyrin IX als Ligand für Eisen-Ionen im Häm b.
