Ein Sextant ist ein nautisches und optisches Messinstrument, mit dem man den Winkel zwischen den Blickrichtungen zu relativ weit entfernten Objekten, insbesondere den Winkelabstand eines Gestirns vom Horizont, bestimmen kann. Er wird hauptsächlich zur Messung des Höhenwinkels von Gestirnen für die astronomische Navigation auf See verwendet, seltener auch in der Luftfahrt und bei Expeditionen. Früher wurde er auch in der Astronomie und der Landvermessung verwendet. Der Name Sextant kommt von dem Geräterahmen, der einen Kreissektor von etwa 60° darstellt, womit aufgrund des Spiegelgesetzes Winkelmessungen in doppeltem Umfange, also um 120° möglich sind. Der Sextant hat deshalb eine Skala von mindestens 120°. Der ältere Oktant hat eine Skala von mindestens 90°. Sein Rahmen umfasst etwa ein Achtel eines Kreises, also 45°. Hiervon leitet sich – analog zum Sextanten – sein Name ab. Hingegen ist der Quadrant ein Winkelmesser bezüglich der Lotrichtung.
