An amentum was a leather strap attached to a javelin used in ancient Greek athletics, hunting, and warfare, which helped to increase the range and the stability of the javelin in flight. Stability in flight was important because it allowed the javelin to land on its point, which was the only way the throw could be accurately recorded in competition or useful against a live target. It is often claimed that the amentum also increases the effective length of the throwing arm as does a spear-thrower and so enhances speed. In the experiments made by General Reffye for the Emperor Napoleon, it was claimed that a javelin could be thrown 80 metres with the amentum and only 20 metres by hand. Such a result could yet not be reproduced, despite being widely quoted. A strap does help to increase the efficiency of energy transmitted by the arm to the projectile, but not increase the amount of energy put into the throw like with a spearthrower. The spin created by the amentum increases accuracy and seems to help increase the effective range within which a penetrating hit of an object can be achieved.
