In nuclear physics, beta decay is a type of radioactive decay in which a beta particle is emitted from an atomic nucleus. Beta decay is a process which allows the atom to obtain the optimal ratio of protons and neutrons. Beta decay is mediated by the weak force. There are two subtypes of beta decay: beta minus and beta plus. Beta minus decay produces an electron, while beta plus decay results in the emission of a positron and is therefore referred to as positron emission. An example of electron emission is shown when carbon-14 decays into nitrogen-14: 14 6C → 14 7N + e− + ν e Notice how, in electron emission, an electron antineutrino is also emitted. In this form of decay, the original element has decayed into a new element with an unchanged mass number A but an atomic number Z that has increased by one.
