पेट्रोलियम (एल। पेट्रोलियम, ग्रीक से: πέτρα (रॉक) + लैटिन: ओलेम (तेल)) एक स्वाभाविक रूप से होने वाली, पीले-से-काले तरल है जो पृथ्वी की सतह के नीचे भूगर्भीय संरचनाओं में पाए जाते हैं, जो आमतौर पर विभिन्न प्रकार के ईंधन में परिष्कृत होते हैं । इसमें विभिन्न आणविक भार और अन्य तरल कार्बनिक यौगिकों के हाइड्रोकार्बन होते हैं। नाम पेट्रोलियम प्राकृतिक रूप से प्रसंस्कृत कच्चे तेल और पेट्रोलियम उत्पादों के दोनों कच्चे तेल के बने होते हैं। एक जीवाश्म ईंधन, पेट्रोलियम का गठन होता है जब मृत जीवों की बड़ी मात्रा में, आमतौर पर झूप्लंकटन और शैवाल, तलछटी चट्टान के नीचे दफन हो जाते हैं और तीव्र गर्मी और दबाव के अधीन होते हैं। तेल ड्रिलिंग के माध्यम से ज्यादातर पेट्रोलियम को पुनर्प्राप्त किया जाता है यह संरचनात्मक भूविज्ञान (जलाशय पैमाने पर), तलछटी बेसिन विश्लेषण, जलाशय के लक्षण वर्णन (मुख्य रूप से भूविज्ञान जलाशय संरचनाओं की पारभासी और पारगम्यता के संदर्भ में) के अध्ययन के बाद आता है। प्लास्टिक और फार्मास्यूटिकल्स बनाने के लिए गैसोलीन (पेट्रोल) और केरोसीन से डामर और रासायनिक अभिकर्मकों से उपभोक्ता उत्पादों की एक बड़ी संख्या में परिष्कृत किया जाता है और अलग-थलग हो जाता है।
