अतीस संज्ञा पुं० [सं०] एक पौधा । विशेष—यह हिमालय के किनारे सिंध नदी से लेकर कुमाऊँ तक पाया जाता है । इसकी जड़ कई प्रकार की दवाओं में काम आती है और खाने में कुछ कड़वी तथा चरपरी होता है । यह पाचक, अग्निसंदीपक और विषघ्न है तथा कफ, पित्त, आम, अतिसार, खाँसी, ज्वर, यकृत और कृमि आदि रोगों को दूर करती है । बालरोगों के लिये यह बहुत उपकारी है । यह तीन प्रकार की होती है—(१) सफेद, (२) काली और (३) लाल । इनमें सफेद अधिक गुणकारी समझी जाती है । पर्याय—विषा, अतिविषा, काश्मीरा, श्वेता, अरुणा, प्रविषा, उपविषा, घुणवल्लभा, श्रृंगी महौषध, भृंगी, श्वेतकंदा, भंगुरा, मृद्वी, शिशुभैषज्य, शोकापहा, श्यामकंदा, विश्वा ।
