बछनाग संज्ञा पुं० [सं० बत्सनाभ]
एक स्थावर बिष ।
पर्या०—काकोला । गरल । विप । दारद ।
विशेष— यह नेपाल के पहाड़ों में होनेवाले पौधे की जड़ है ।
इसे सीगिया, तेलिया और मीठा विष भी कहते हैं । यह देखने
में हिरन की सींग के आकार का होता है । इसका रंग कड़ुवे
तेल की तरह कानापन लिए पीला होता है और स्वाद
मीठा होता है । इसकी जड़ के रेशों के बीचे गोंद की
तरह गूदा होता है, जो गीला रहने पर तो नरम रहता है पर
सूखने पर बहुत कड़ा हो जाता है । इसके अतिरिक्त एक
प्रकार का और बछनाग होता है जो काला और इससे बड़ा
होता है और जिसके ऊपर छोटे छोटे दाग होते हैं जो गाँठ की तरह मालूम पड़ते है । इसे काला बछनाग या कालकूट
कहते हैं । यह शिकम (सिक्किम) की पहाड़ियों में होता है । ये दोनों ही विष हैं और के खाने से प्राणियों की
मृत्यु होती है । वैद्यक में बछनाग का स्वाद मीठा, प्रकृति
गरम और गुण वात एवं कफनाशक तथा कंठरोग और
सन्निपात को दूर करनेवाला बतलाया गया है । इसका प्रयोग
औषघों में होता है । निघटु में इसके वत्सनाभ, हारिद्र,
सवतुक, प्रदीपन, सौराष्ट्रक, श्रृंगक, कालकूट और ब्रह्मपुत्र,
ये नौ भेद बतलाए गए हैं ।
