तमाकू संज्ञा पुं० [पुर्त० टबैको] १. तीन से छह फुट तक ऊँचा एक प्रसिद्ध पौधा जो एशिया, अमेरिका तथा उत्तर युरोप में अधिकता से होता है । तंबाकू । विशेष—इसकी अनेक जातियाँ हैं, पर खाने या पीने के काम में केवल ५-६ तरह के पत्ते ही आते हैं । इसके पत्ते २-३ फुट तक लंबे, विषाक्त और नशीले होते हैं । भारत के भिन्न भिन्न प्रांतों में इसके बोने का समय एक दूसरे से अलग है, पर बहुधा यह कुआर, कातिक से लेकर पूस तक बोया जाता है । इसके लिये वह जमीन उपयुक्त होती है जिसमें खार अधिक हो । इसमें खाद की बहुत अधिक आवश्यकता होती है । जिस जमीन में यह बोया जाता है, उसमें साल में बहुधा केवल इसी की एक फसल होती है । पहले इसका बीज बोया जाता है और जब इसके अंकुर ५-६ इंच के ऊँचे हो जाते हैं, तब इसे दूसरी जमीन में, जो पहले से कई बार बहुत
