Istilah glob berasal dari bahasa Latin iaitu globus yang bermaksud bulatan atau gelang atau pusingan. Secara perbandingan, keadaan glob dengan bumi sebenar tidaklah sama. Permukaan glob agak rata, tidak ada gunung-ganang dan lautan serta jurang. Permukaan glob dipenuhi maklumat bertulis sama ada dalam bentuk teks, simbol dan warna berbeza. Di atas glob juga dilukis garisan ilusi iaitu latitud dan longitud. Saiz glob juga berbeza-beza dan cantik untuk dijadikan hiasan dan cenderahati kepada peminat geografi. Ada juga glob yang menunjukkan keadaan topografi, ketinggian sesuatu tempat tetapi masih dianggap rata, tidak herot-berot sebagaimana bumi sebenar. Nisbah antara glob dengan bumi ialah 1:40 juta.
