Uzun süre Osmanlı egemenliğinde kalan Muha, 1636'da Yemen hükümdarı I. Muhammed el-Müeyyed tarafından alındı. Osmanlılar 1849-1918'de kentin denetimini yeniden ellerine geçirdiler. Felemenklilerin Cava Adasında kahve plantasyonları kurmaları ve 18. yüzyılın başlarında Güney Amerika'da kahve sanayisinin gelişmesiyle birlikte limanın önemi azalmaya başladı. 17 ile 18. yüzyıllar arasında Yemen'in başlıca limanı olduğu dönemde Muha nüfusunun 50 bin'e kadar ulaştığı tahmin edilir. 19. yüzyılın başına gelindiğindeyse yaklaşık 20 bin'e gerilemişti.
