Ormone adrenocorticotropico
L'ormone adrenocorticotropico, noto anche come corticotropina, è un ormone tropico del polipeptide prodotto e secreto dalla ghiandola pituitaria anteriore. È una componente importante dell'asse ipotalamo-ipofisi-surrenale e viene spesso prodotta in risposta allo stress biologico. I suoi principali effetti sono una maggiore produzione e rilascio di corticosteroidi. L'insufficienza epatica primaria, chiamata anche malattia di Addison, si verifica quando la produzione di ghiandole surrenali di cortisolo è cronicamente carente, con conseguente livelli ACTH elevati cronicamente; Quando un tumore pituitario è la causa di ACTH elevato è noto come la malattia di Cushing e la costellazione di segni e sintomi del cortisolo in eccesso è conosciuta come la sindrome di Cushing. Una carenza di ACTH è una causa di insufficienza secondaria surrenale. L'ACTH è anche correlato al ritmo circadiano in molti organismi.
