Nella mitologia greca, Eegisthus era figlio di Thyestes e della figlia di Thyestes, Pelopia. I testi sentivano che era stato privato del trono miceneo ingiustamente dal fratello Atreo. I due hanno combattuto avanti e indietro diverse volte. Inoltre, Thyestes aveva una relazione con la moglie di Atreus, Aerope. In vendetta, Atreo ha ucciso i figli di Thyestes e li ha serviti inconsapevolmente. Dopo aver mangiato i cadaveri dei propri figli, Thyestes chiese ad un oracolo come meglio vendicarsi. Il consiglio era di padre di un figlio con sua figlia, Pelopia, e quel figlio avrebbe ucciso Atreo. Thyestes ha violentato Pelopia dopo aver eseguito un sacrificio, nascondendo la sua identità da lei. Quando Eegisthus nacque, sua madre lo abbandonò, vergognato della sua origine, ed era cresciuto da pastori e da una capra, da qui il nome Aegisthus. Atreus, senza conoscere l'origine del bambino, prese Aegisthus e lo sollevò come suo figlio. Nella notte in cui Pelopia aveva condiviso il letto di suo padre, aveva tolto da lui la sua spada che poi aveva dato ad Aegisthus. Questa spada divenne il mezzo attraverso il quale si scoprì il rapporto incestuoso tra lei e suo padre, dopodiché ha messo fine alla propria vita.
