Alexithymia / ˌeɪlɛksəθaɪmiə / è un costume di personalità caratterizzato dall'incapacità subclinica di identificare e descrivere le emozioni nel sé. Le caratteristiche fondamentali di alexithymia sono marcate disfunzioni nella consapevolezza emotiva, nell'attaccamento sociale e nella relazione interpersonale. Inoltre, gli individui che soffrono di alexitimia hanno anche difficoltà a distinguere e apprezzare le emozioni degli altri, che si pensa di portare a una risposta emozionale inadeguata e inefficace. La Alexithimia è prevalente in circa il 10% della popolazione generale e si sa che è comorbidita da una serie di condizioni psichiatriche. Il termine "alexithymia" è stato coniato dalla psicoterapeuta Peter Sifneos nel 1973. Secondo l'OED, la parola deriva dalle parole greche λέξις e θυμός modificate da una privativa alfa, letteralmente significante "nessuna parola per emozioni".
