Nella chimica brevettuale, un sostituente alchilico è un alcano mancante di un idrogeno. Il termine alchilico è intenzionalmente non specifico per includere molte possibili sostituzioni nei brevetti chimici. Un alchile aciclico ha la formula generale CnH2n + 1. Un cicloalchile deriva da un cicloalcano rimuovendo un atomo di idrogeno da un anello e ha la formula generale CnH2n-1. Tipicamente un alchile è una parte di una molecola più grande. Nella formula strutturale, il simbolo R viene usato per designare un gruppo alchilico generico. Il gruppo alchilico più piccolo è il metile, con la formula CH3-.
