Amitosis
L'amitosi è un termine obsoleto che descrive la divisione delle cellule eucariotiche senza la rottura della busta nucleare e la formazione di un mandrino mitotico ben visibile e dei cromosomi condensati. La divisione di eucarioti unicellulari precedentemente considerati come amitosi si chiama oggi la mitosi chiusa. Un'eccezione è la divisione del macronucleo ciliato, che non è mitotico e il riferimento a questo processo come amitosi può essere l'unico uso legittimo del termine oggi. Negli animali e nelle piante che presentano normalmente la mitosi aperta, l'immagine microscopica descritta nel diciannovesimo secolo come amitosi probabilmente corrispondeva all'apoptosi, un processo di morte cellulare programmata associata alla frammentazione del nucleo e del citoplasma. In realtà, anche nel tardo 19esimo secolo i citologi hanno menzionato che nelle forme di vita più grandi, la amitosi è un "precursore della degenerazione".
