Un RNA di trasferimento è una molecola di adattatore composta da RNA, tipicamente da 73 a 94 nucleotidi di lunghezza, che funge da collegamento fisico tra la sequenza nucleotidica degli acidi nucleici e la sequenza aminoacidica delle proteine. Lo fa portando un aminoacido alla macchina sintetica proteica di una cellula come diretto da una sequenza a tre nucleotidi in un RNA messaggero. In quanto tali, i tRNA sono una componente necessaria alla traduzione della proteina, la sintesi biologica di nuove proteine secondo il codice genetico. La sequenza nucleotidica specifica di un mRNA specifica quali aminoacidi sono incorporati nel prodotto proteico del gene da cui è trascritto il mRNA e il ruolo del tRNA è quello di specificare quale sequenza dal codice genetico corrisponde a quale aminoacido. Una fine del tRNA corrisponde al codice genetico in una sequenza a tre nucleotidi chiamata anticodone. L'anticodone forma tre coppie di base con un codone in mRNA durante la biosintesi proteica. L'mRNA codifica una proteina come una serie di codoni contigui, ognuno dei quali è riconosciuto da un particolare tRNA. Sull'altra estremità del tRNA è un attacco covalente all'amminoacido che corrisponde alla sequenza anticodonica.
