Nella logica e nella filosofia, un argomento è un tentativo di convincere qualcuno di qualcosa, dando ragioni per accettare una conclusione particolare come evidente. La forma generale di un argomento in un linguaggio naturale è quella dei locali a sostegno di una domanda: la conclusione. La struttura di alcuni argomenti può anche essere definita in un linguaggio formale e gli argomenti formalmente definiti possono essere fatti indipendentemente dagli argomenti della lingua naturale, come nella matematica, nella logica e nella scienza informatica. In un tipico argomento deduttivo, i locali sono destinati a fornire una garanzia della verità della conclusione, mentre in un argomento induttivo, si pensa che forniscano ragioni per sostenere la verità probabile della conclusione. Gli standard per la valutazione degli argomenti non deduttivi possono poggiare su criteri differenti o aggiuntivi rispetto alla verità, ad esempio la persuasività dei cosiddetti "indizi di indispensabilità" in argomenti trascendentali, la qualità delle ipotesi in materia di riproduzione, o anche la divulgazione di nuove possibilità per Pensando e agendo. Gli standard e i criteri utilizzati nella valutazione degli argomenti e delle loro forme di ragionamento sono studiati in logica.
