Asclepias
Asclepias L., le latte di latte, è un genere di piante erbacee perenni e bilicate che contengono più di 140 specie conosciute. Precedentemente apparteneva alla famiglia Asclepiadaceae, ma questo è ora classificato come la sottofamiglia Asclepiadoideae della famiglia Apocynaceae dogbane. Milkweed è chiamato per il suo succo latte che consiste di un lattice contenente alcaloidi e diversi altri complessi composti compresi i cardenolid. Alcune specie sono noti per essere tossiche. Carl Linnaeus ha nominato il genere dopo Asclepio, dio greco della guarigione, a causa dei molti usi medicinali folk per le piante da mungitura. L'impollinazione in questo genere viene compiuta in modo insolito. Il polline è raggruppato in strutture complesse chiamate pollinia, piuttosto che essere singoli chicchi o tetradi, come è tipico per la maggior parte delle piante. I piedi o bocche di insetti da fiore, quali le api, le vespe e le farfalle, scivolano in una delle cinque fessure di ogni fiore formato da antere adiacenti. Le basi della pollinia poi attaccano meccanicamente all'insetto, tirando un paio di sacchi pollinici liberi quando l'impollinatore vola.
