L'associazione è l'idea che i processi mentali operano dall'associazione di uno stato mentale con i suoi stati successori. L'idea è registrata per la prima volta a Plato e Aristotele, in particolare per quanto riguarda la successione di memorie. I membri della "Scuola Associazione" principalmente britannica, tra cui John Locke, David Hume, David Hartley, James Mill, John Stuart Mill, Alexander Bain e Ivan Pavlov, hanno affermato che il principio è applicato a tutti o in molti processi mentali. Più tardi i membri della scuola svilupparono principi molto specifici che elaboravano come funzionavano le associazioni e anche un meccanismo fisiologico che non somigliava alla neurofisiologia moderna.
