L'atomo è un'unità base di materia che consiste in un nucleo centrale denso circondato da una nuvola di elettroni a carica negativa. Il nucleo atomico contiene un mix di protoni caricati positivamente e neutroni elettricamente neutri. Gli elettroni di un atomo sono legati al nucleo dalla forza elettromagnetica. Allo stesso modo, un gruppo di atomi può rimanere legati tra loro da legami chimici basati sulla stessa forza, formando una molecola.
