Augusto era il fondatore dell'Impero Romano e il suo primo imperatore, che governava dal 27 aC fino alla sua morte nel 14 dC. Nasce Gaius Octavius in un vecchio e ricco ramo equestre della plebeianica Octavii. Dopo l'assassinio del suo grande zio Giulio Cesare nel 44 aC, la volontà di Cesare chiamò Ottaviano come figlio e erede adottato. Insieme a Marco Antonio e Marco Lepido, formò il secondo triumvirato per sconfiggere gli assassini di Cesare. Dopo la loro vittoria a Philipi, il Triumvirato divise la Repubblica Romana tra di loro e governò come dittatori militari. Il Triumvirato fu infranto dalle ambizioni concorrenti dei suoi membri: Lepido fu spinto in esilio e spogliato della sua posizione, e Antony si suicidò dopo la sua sconfitta alla battaglia di Actio da Augusto nel 31 aC. Dopo la scomparsa del secondo triumvirato, Augusto ripristinò la facciata esterna della Repubblica libera, con potere governativo attribuito al Senato romano, ai magistrati esecutivi e alle assemblee legislative.
