Avestan / əvɛstən, già conosciuto anche come "Zend" o "Old Bactrian", è una lingua iraniana orientale conosciuta solo dal suo uso come lingua della scrittura zoroastrica, vale a dire l'Avesta, da cui deriva il suo nome. La sua zona di composizione comprendeva - almeno - Arachosia / Sīstān, Herat, Merv e Bactria. La cultura Yaz è stata considerata come un probabile riflesso archeologico della prima cultura iraniana orientale descritta nell'Avesta. Lo status di Avestan come un linguaggio sacro ha assicurato il suo continuo utilizzo per nuove composizioni molto tempo dopo che la lingua aveva cessato di essere un linguaggio vivente. È strettamente legato alla sanscrita vedica, la più antica lingua indo-ariana conservata.
