Un azeotropo è una miscela di due o più liquidi le cui proporzioni non possono essere alterate dalla semplice distillazione. Ciò accade perché quando un azeotropo è bollito, il vapore ha le stesse proporzioni di costituenti come la miscela non combustibile. Poiché la loro composizione è invariata dalla distillazione, le azeotropie sono anche chiamate miscele costanti a bolle. La parola azeotrope deriva dalle parole greche ζέειν e τρόπος combinate con il prefisso α- per dare il significato globale, "nessuna modifica alla bollitura". Sono state documentate miscele azeotropiche di coppie di composti e sono note anche molte azeotropie di tre o più composti. Sono miscele binarie aventi la stessa composizione in fase liquida e vapore e bollire ad una temperatura costante. In tal caso non è possibile separare i componenti dalla distillazione frazionata. Ci sono due tipi di azeotropi: azeotrope minima bollente e azeotropo massimo bollente. Una soluzione che mostra una maggiore deviazione positiva dalla legge di Raoult costituisce un azeotropo minimo bollente ad una composizione specifica.
