Il controllo di un cassiere è un assegno garantito da una banca, prelevato sui fondi propri della banca e firmato da un cassiere. I controlli di cassa vengono trattati come fondi garantiti perché la banca, piuttosto che l'acquirente, è responsabile del pagamento dell'importo. Ciò è in contrasto con un controllo personale, in cui la banca non addebita l'importo dal conto del cliente finché il controllo non viene depositato o incassato dal destinatario. I controlli di cassa depositati in un conto bancario vengono generalmente cancellati il giorno successivo. È il diritto del cliente di richiedere la "disponibilità di prossima giornata" al momento del deposito di un assegno di cassieri in persona. La maggior parte delle banche non li chiude istantaneamente. Tuttavia, le banche sono autorizzate a riprendere il denaro da un controllo "eliminato" una o due settimane dopo se la successiva trasformazione lo rivelerà fraudolente.
