Le piume sono una delle epidermiche che formano il rivestimento esterno o il piumaggio distintivo sugli uccelli e su alcuni dinosauri teropodi non aviari. Sono considerate le strutture protettive più complesse che si trovano nei vertebrati e anzi un esempio primario di una novità complessa evolutiva. Aiuta a volo, isolamento termico, impermeabilizzazione e colorazione che aiuta nella comunicazione e nella protezione.
