I metodi del punto interni sono una certa classe di algoritmi per risolvere problemi di ottimizzazione convex lineari e non lineari. Soluzione di esempio Il metodo del punto interno è stato inventato da John von Neumann. Von Neumann ha suggerito un nuovo metodo di programmazione lineare, utilizzando il sistema omogeneo lineare di Gordan, che è stato poi diffuso dall'algoritmo di Karmarkar, sviluppato da Narendra Karmarkar nel 1984 per la programmazione lineare. Il metodo è costituito da una funzione barriera auto-concordante utilizzata per codificare il set convesso. Contrariamente al metodo simplex, raggiunge una soluzione ottimale attraversando l'interno della regione fattibile. Qualsiasi problema di ottimizzazione convessa può essere trasformato in minimizzare una funzione lineare su un set convesso convertendosi nella forma epigrafica. L'idea di codificare l'insieme fattibile utilizzando una barriera e la progettazione di metodi di barriera sono stati studiati da Anthony V. Fiacco, Garth P. McCormick e altri nei primi anni '60. Queste idee sono state sviluppate principalmente per la programmazione non lineare generale, ma sono state successivamente abbandonate a causa della presenza di metodi più competitivi per questa classe di problemi.
