Basophil granulocyte
I granulociti basofili, maggiormente indicati come basofili, sono i meno comuni dei granulociti, che rappresentano circa lo 0,01% a 0,3% dei globuli bianchi circolanti. I basofili contengono grandi granuli citoplasmatici che oscurano il nucleo cellulare sotto il microscopio quando vengono macchiati. Tuttavia, quando non è colorato, il nucleo è visibile e di solito ha due lobi. La cella d'albero, un altro granulocyte, è simile in aspetto e funzione. Entrambi i tipi di cellule memorizzano l'istamina, una sostanza che viene secreta dalle cellule quando viene stimolata. Tuttavia, essi derivano da diverse linee cellulari, e le cellule degli alberi solitamente non circolano nel flusso sanguigno, ma sono invece situate in tessuto connettivo. Come tutti i granulociti circolanti, i basofili possono essere reclutati fuori dal sangue in un tessuto quando necessario. Il nome deriva dal fatto che questi leucociti sono basofili, cioè sono suscettibili di colorazione da coloranti di base, come mostrato nell'immagine.
