Benomyl è un fungicida introdotto nel 1968 da DuPont. Si tratta di un fungicida sistemica di benzimidazolo che è selettivamente tossica per i microrganismi e gli invertebrati, soprattutto i lombrichi. Benomyl si lega ai microtubuli, interferendo con funzioni cellulari, come la meiosi e il trasporto intracellulare. La tossicità selettiva del benomil come fungicida è probabilmente dovuta al suo effetto aumentato sui microtubuli fungini piuttosto che sui mammiferi. A causa dello sviluppo e della prevalenza mondiale della resistenza dei funghi parassiti a benomil, esso e simili composti di pesticidi sono diventati in gran parte inefficaci. Gli elevati costi legali connessi con esso hanno causato la cessazione della produzione da parte di DuPont nel 2001 dopo 33 anni sul mercato e ha chiesto volontariamente la cancellazione per la sua registrazione. Tuttavia, poiché i brevetti di DuPont sono stati scaduti molto tempo fa e in alcuni paesi la registrazione di benomyl non è stata revocata, altri produttori lo producono ancora.
