Biotecnologia
La biotecnologia è l'uso di sistemi e organismi viventi per sviluppare o produrre prodotti utili o "qualsiasi applicazione tecnologica che utilizzi sistemi biologici, organismi viventi o derivati da loro, per produrre o modificare prodotti o processi per usi specifici". A seconda degli strumenti e delle applicazioni, spesso si sovrappongono con i campi di bioingegneria e di ingegneria biomedica. Per migliaia di anni l'umanità ha utilizzato la biotecnologia in agricoltura, produzione alimentare e medicina. Il termine stesso è in gran parte ritenuto essere stato coniato nel 1919 dall'ingegnere ungherese Károly Ereky. Alla fine del XX e all'inizio del XXI secolo, la biotecnologia si è ampliata per includere nuove e diverse scienze come la genomica, le tecnologie del gene ricombinante, l'immunologia applicata e lo sviluppo di terapie farmaceutiche e test diagnostici.
