Grande Lago Bitter
Il lago grande è un lago di acqua salata che fa parte del canale di Suez. È collegato al Lago Piccolo Bitter, attraverso il quale anche il canale corre. Prima che il canale fosse stato costruito, il loro sito era occupato da valli salate secche. Insieme, i laghi bestiali hanno una superficie di circa 250 km². Il canale attraversa anche il Lago di Manzala e il Lago di Timsah, a nord dei laghi inquieti. Poiché il canale non ha serrature, l'acqua marina scorre liberamente nel lago dal Mediterraneo e dal Mar Rosso. In generale, a nord dei laghi, la corrente si inverte stagionalmente, essendo nord in inverno e sud in estate. A sud dei laghi, l'attuale è la marea, invertendo con le maree nel Mar Rosso. I pesci possono migrare, generalmente in direzione nord, attraverso il canale ei laghi in quello che è conosciuto come una migrazione di Lessepsi. Con questo mezzo alcune specie del Mar Rosso sono venute a colonizzare il Mediterraneo orientale. Nella seconda parte della seconda guerra mondiale, il lago era abituato a internare le navi da guerra italiane che si erano arrivati agli alleati, tra cui le corazzate Vittorio Veneto e Italia.
