Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius, comunemente chiamato Boethius, era un filosofo del primo secolo VI. Nato a Roma all'antica e prominente famiglia Anicia, che comprendeva imperatori Petronius Maximus e Olybrius e molti consoli. Suo padre, Flavius Manlius Boethius, fu console nel 487, dopo che Odoacer depose l'ultimo imperatore romano occidentale. Boethius stesso è entrato in vita pubblica in giovane età ed era già un senatore all'età di 25 anni. Era console nel 510 nel regno degli Ostrogoti. Nel 522 vide i suoi due figli a diventare consoli.
