Quando un fluido ruota e le forze viscose sono bilanciate dall'effetto Coriolis, si forma uno strato di Ekman. Nella teoria del trasferimento di calore, si verifica uno strato di confine termico. Una superficie può avere più tipi di strato di confine contemporaneamente.
