Cadmus / kædməs / Kadmos nella mitologia greca, era un principe fenicio, figlio del re Agenor e della regina Telephassa di Tire e del fratello di Phoenix, Cilix e Europa. Era stato mandato originariamente dai suoi genitori reali a cercare e accompagnare la sorella Europa a Tire, dopo essere stato rapito da Zeus da Fenicia. Cadmus fondò la città greca di Tebe, la cui acropoli fu originariamente chiamata Cadmeia in suo onore. Cadmus è stato accreditato dagli antichi greci con l'introduzione dell'alfabeto originale o alfabeto fenicio - foinikeia grammata, "lettere fenicia" - ai greci, che l'adattarono a formare il loro alfabeto greco. Su uno dei treppiedi c'era questa iscrizione nella scrittura Cadmea, che, come ha attestato, assomigliava a lettere ioniche: Ἀμφιτρύων μ ἀνέθηκ ἐνάρων ἀπὸ Τηλεβοάων.
