Ceanothus
Ceanothus L. / ˌsiːənoʊθəs / è un genere di circa 50-60 specie di arbusti o di piccoli alberi nella famiglia Rhamnaceae. Il genere è confinato in Nord America, con il centro della sua distribuzione in California. Alcune specie si trovano negli Stati Uniti orientali e Canada sudorientale, mentre altri si estendono fino a sud come Guatemala. La maggior parte sono arbusti da 0,5 a 3 m, ma C. arboreus e C. thyrsiflorus, entrambi dalla California, possono essere piccoli alberi fino a 6-7 m di altezza. Il nome deriva dalla parola greca κεανοθος, applicata da Theophrastus a una pianta spinosa del Vecchio Mondo ritenuta Cirsium arvense.
