Il ciclo cellulare, o ciclo di divisione cellulare, è la serie di eventi che si verificano in una cellula che porta alla sua divisione e duplicazione che produce due cellule figlia. Nelle cellule senza un nucleo, il ciclo cellulare avviene attraverso un processo chiamato fissione binaria. Nelle cellule con un nucleo, il ciclo cellulare può essere suddiviso in tre periodi: l'interfaccia durante la quale la cellula cresce, accumulando nutrienti necessari per la mitosi che lo prepara per la divisione cellulare e duplicando il suo DNA e la fase mitotica durante la quale la cellula si divide In due cellule distinte, spesso chiamate "cellule figlia" e la fase finale, citochinesi, dove la nuova cellula è completamente divisa. Il ciclo di divisione cellulare è un processo vitale attraverso cui un uovo fecondato monocellulare si sviluppa in un organismo maturo, così come il processo di rinnovo dei capelli, della pelle, delle cellule del sangue e di alcuni organi interni. Dopo la divisione cellulare, ciascuna delle cellule figlia inizia l'interfaccia di un nuovo ciclo. Sebbene le diverse fasi dell'interfaccia non siano di solito morfologicamente distinguibili, ogni fase del ciclo cellulare presenta un insieme distinto di processi biochimici specializzati che preparano la cellula per l'iniziazione della divisione cellulare.
