Cephalochordata è un subphylum di chordate definito dalla presenza di un notochord che persiste per tutta la vita. È rappresentata negli oceani moderni dalle lancelet. Insieme con la sua sorella phylum Urochordata, Cephalochordata può essere classificata come appartenente al taxon Protochordata. Le caratteristiche di Cephalochordata sono che sono animali marini, segmentati, e che possiedono corpi allungati con un notochord che estende la lunghezza del corpo e cirri che circondano la bocca per ottenere cibo. In cephalochordata il notochord si estende dalla testa alla coda e persiste per tutta la vita. I membri di questo subfilo sono molto piccoli e non hanno parti dure, rendendo i loro fossili difficili da trovare. Le specie fossilizzate sono state trovate in rocce molto antiche che precedono i vertebrati. C'è un famoso scisto di fossili proveniente dal cespuglio medievale di Burgess Shark della Columbia Britannica, che ha prodotto i fossili di Pikaia. Recentemente un altro fossile cephalochordate è stato trovato nella Cina meridionale. Risale al periodo precoce del Cambriano ed è il più antico fossile del cefalochordate. Hanno numerose fessure di gabbia e hanno sessi separati.
