I calcogeni sono gli elementi chimici del gruppo 16 della tavola periodica. Questo gruppo è anche conosciuto come la famiglia di ossigeno. Consiste degli elementi ossigeno, zolfo, selenio, tellurio e polonio dell'elemento radioattivo. Il livermorium dell'elemento sintetico è previsto anche un calcio. Spesso l'ossigeno viene trattato separatamente dagli altri calciogeni, talvolta persino esclusi dal campo di applicazione del termine "calcogeno", a causa del suo comportamento chimico molto diverso da zolfo, selenio, tellurio e polonio. La parola "calcogeno" deriva da una combinazione della parola greca khalkόs, principalmente significante di rame, e la parola greca latinizzata genēs, che significa nato o prodotto. Lo zolfo è stato conosciuto sin dall'antichità e l'ossigeno è stato riconosciuto come un elemento nel XVIII secolo. Il selenio, il tellurio e il polonio sono stati scoperti nel diciannovesimo secolo e livermorium nel 2000. Tutti i calcogeni hanno sei elettroni di valenza, lasciandoli due elettroni a corto di un guscio esterno completo. I loro stati di ossidazione più comuni sono -2, +2, +4 e +6. Hanno raggi atomici relativamente bassi, specialmente quelli più leggeri.
