Il chemo-tropismo è la crescita di organismi come batteri e piante, guidati da stimoli chimici dall'esterno dell'organismo o dalle parti degli organismi. La risposta dell'organismo o dell'organismo è chiamata "positiva" se la crescita è verso lo stimolo o "negativo" se la crescita è lontana dallo stimolo. Un esempio di movimento chemo-tropico può essere visto durante la crescita del tubo di polline, dove la crescita è sempre verso i ovuli. Si può anche scrivere che la conversione del fiore in frutta è l'esempio del chemo-tropismo. La fertilizzazione dei fiori per polline viene raggiunta perché l'ovaio rilascia sostanze chimiche che producono una risposta positiva chemo-tropica dal tubo pollinico in fase di sviluppo. Un esempio di chemo-tropismo positivo e negativo è mostrato dalle radici di una pianta; Le radici crescono verso utili minerali che mostrano il positivo chemo-tropismo e si allontanano dagli acidi nocivi che presentano il chemo-tropismo negativo. Un altro esempio di movimenti chemo-tropici comprende la crescita di singoli assoni cellulari neuronali in risposta a segnali cellulari aggiuntivi, che guidano l'assone in via di sviluppo per innervare il giusto tessuto bersaglio.
