Radiazione di Cherenkov
La radiazione di Cherenkov, conosciuta anche come radiazione di Vavilov-Cherenkov, è la radiazione elettromagnetica emessa quando una particella carica passa attraverso un mezzo dielettrico ad una velocità superiore alla velocità di fase della luce in quel mezzo. Il caratteristico bagliore blu di un reattore nucleare subacqueo è dovuto alla radiazione Cherenkov. Ha il nome dello scienziato sovietico Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov, vincitore del premio Nobel del 1958, che è stato il primo a riconoscerlo sperimentalmente. Una teoria di questo effetto fu poi sviluppata nel quadro della teoria della relatività speciale di Einstein da Igor Tamm e Ilya Frank, che condividevano anche il Premio Nobel. La radiazione di Cherenkov era stata teoricamente prevista dal polymath inglese Oliver Heaviside nelle pubblicazioni pubblicate nel 1888-1889.
