Chinook Jargon
Il jargon di Chinook è nato come linguaggio commerciale pitgin del nord-ovest del Pacifico e si diffuse nel XIX secolo dal basso fiume Columbia, prima in altre zone dell'Oregon moderno e di Washington, poi della Columbia Britannica e fino ad Alaska e Yukon Territory Caratteristiche di un linguaggio creolo. È legato, ma non lo stesso, al linguaggio aborigeno della gente di Chinook, su cui si basa gran parte del suo vocabolario. Molte parole del Chinook Jargon rimangono in uso comune negli Stati Uniti occidentali e nella Columbia Britannica e nel Yukon, nelle lingue indigene e nell'uso regionale della lingua inglese, fino al punto in cui la maggior parte delle persone non è a conoscenza della parola originaria del jargon. Il numero totale di parole di gergo in lessici pubblicati numerati solo nelle centinaia e quindi è stato facile da imparare. Ha un suo sistema grammaticale, ma molto semplice che, come la sua lista di parole, è stato facile da imparare. La consonante 'r' è rara sebbene esista nel Chargo Chinook e le parole di prestito inglese e francese, come il 'riso' e 'merci', sono cambiate nell'adozione al giaguaro, a 'pidocchi' e 'mahsie' rispettivamente.
