Chloroplasts / klɔrəplæsts / sono organelle, subunità specializzate, nelle piante e nelle cellule alghe. Il loro ruolo principale è quello di condurre fotosintesi, dove la clorofilla del pigmento fotosintetico cattura l'energia dalla luce solare e lo immagazzina nelle molecole di conservazione dell'energia ATP e NADPH, liberando l'ossigeno dall'acqua. Quindi utilizzano l'ATP e NADPH per rendere molecole organiche dall'anidride carbonica in un processo noto come il ciclo Calvin. I cloroplasti svolgono una serie di altre funzioni, tra cui la sintesi degli acidi grassi, la sintesi di aminoacidi e la risposta immunitaria nelle piante. Un cloroplasto è uno dei tre tipi di plastide, caratterizzato dalla sua elevata concentrazione di clorofilla. I cloroplasti sono altamente dinamici: circolano e vengono spostati all'interno delle cellule vegetali, e talvolta si pizzicano in due per riprodursi. Il loro comportamento è fortemente influenzato da fattori ambientali come il colore chiaro e l'intensità. I cloroplasti, come i mitocondri, contengono il proprio DNA, il quale è considerato ereditato dal loro antenato, un cianobatterio fotosintetico che è stato inghiottito da una cella eucariota precoce.
