Previene depositi di grasso nel fegato e facilita il movimento dei grassi nelle cellule. Le fonti più ricche di colina sono fegato, rene, cervello, germe di grano, lievito di birra e tuorlo d'uovo. Neurologicamente, il colinergico è il termine abbreviato riferito all'acetilcolina. Il sistema nervoso parasimpatico, che utilizza quasi esclusivamente l'acetilcolina per inviare i propri messaggi, si dice quasi interamente colinergica. Le giunzioni neuromuscolari, i neuroni preganglionici del sistema nervoso simpatico, il forebrainale di base e i complessi del gambo cerebrale sono anche colinergici. Inoltre, il recettore per le ghiandole sudore merocrine è anche colinergica, in quanto l'acetilcolina viene rilasciata dai neuroni simpatici postgangliari.
