Il Canario domestico, spesso conosciuto semplicemente come il canarino, è una forma addomesticata della Canaria selvaggia, un piccolo canto da zucchero nella famiglia finch da origine delle isole Macaronesiane. Le Canarie furono prime allevati in cattività nel XVII secolo. Sono stati portati da marinai spagnoli in Europa. Questo uccello è diventato costoso e alla moda per l'allevamento in tribunali dei re spagnoli e inglesi. I monaci hanno iniziato l'allevamento e hanno venduto solo i maschi. Questo ha mantenuto gli uccelli in scarsa disponibilità e ha portato il prezzo in su. Finalmente gli italiani ottennero le galline e sono stati in grado di allevare gli uccelli stessi. Questo li ha resi molto popolari e ha portato molte razze che sorgono e gli uccelli che vengono allevati in tutta Europa. Lo stesso è avvenuto in Inghilterra. In primo luogo gli uccelli erano solo di proprietà dei ricchi, ma alla fine i cittadini cominciarono a razzarli e, di nuovo, diventarono molto popolari. Molte razze sono nate attraverso l'allevamento selettivo e sono ancora oggi molto popolari per la loro voce.
